Facts about coupling methods on synthetic piping

Since the introduction of plastic piping there has always been a search for more efficient and less costly coupling or joining methods...

Such a method is now available!

HDPE Piping

HDPE piping can to this day only be connected with so called compression fittings up to a size of 110mm. A number of companies are now importing these fittings from various countries. This has started a price war resulting in inferior and largely untested products.

Larger pipe sizes require a rather crude method whereby the ends of the pipes are melted and then hydraulically pressed together to form a joint. This method requires heavy and expensive equipment and is extremely time consuming. No method currently exists to join HDPE pipe larger than 110mm without having to Butt or Fusion weld.

PVC Piping

The drawback with joining PVC piping derives from the fact that although methods exist to couple straight piping these joints have to be anchored to prevent the pipes from slipping apart.
Methods to join non standard lengths of piping or to fit T-pieces and bends are very limited and regquire gluing on smaller pipes.
On larger sizes a metal neck ring is knocked over the pipe end to accommodate a rubber seal and a metal clamp. Standard lengths are dispatched from the pipe manufacturers with the metal rings already installed.
These rings are pressed on hydraulically with substantial pressure.
Should it therefore be necessary to shorten the pipe it remains for a new ring to be pressed on or in the absence of a press to be hammered over the end of the pipe. This becomes extremely cumbersome especially in underground conditions.

In recognition of this quandary a coupling has been designed by the company CLAMPON to largely alleviate the mentioned problems.
The CLAMPON coupler consists of a rubber seal joining the pipes, with two metal halves covering the rubber seal. Grip rings on the metal clamps effectively grip onto the pipe.
The coupler rated 16 bar was SABS tested to failure and detached from the pipe at a hefty 50 bar on HDPE piping. Tests were also performed on PVC piping by two independent pipe manufacturers and the same result was achieved. This over design was necessary to allow for factors such as surges or water hammer.
